Description

This is a downloadable PDF format Tutorial that will show you how to program Apple’s Siri Shortcuts to react properly to your spoken commands such as: “Hey Siri, Open Garage Door 1”, for a device in HomeKit.

This tutorial assumes that you already have a WiFi Switch connected to the device you want to control (i.e. Garage Door, Gate, or Window), and that your switch is available in Apple HomeKit, and now you want this extra functionality.

Currently Apple’s Homekit only recognizes 3 things: a Fan, a Light, and a Switch. As a result, you can only request that Siri turn “ON” or “OFF” those items, but not “OPEN” or “CLOSE” them. For example, in English we don’t normally say “Turn ON Garage Door 1”. We say, “Open Garage Door 1”. But, despite the “artificial intelligence” claims, Siri does not understand this subtle difference.

So, even without programming, you can still get Apple’s Siri to perform basic switch “ON” and “OFF” commands. But with programming you can add so many more security and convenience features, including the use of more naturally spoken commands.

Apple’s Siri Shortcuts works in the same manner as a programming language like Basic or Java. In this case, you will be constructing Shortcut programs that let Siri recognize how to react to your more specific verbal commands.

You will be able to have Siri:

  • react to your naturally spoken command for a specific item (i.e. “Hey Siri, Open Garage Door 1” or “Hey Siri, Close the West Gate”).
  • prompt you for a verbal Authorization PIN before the command is passed to the device (i.e. Door will not open without a properly spoken PIN).
  • check if the door is already open or closed or if any other device is in any particular state prior to allowing command execution.
  • prevent door from opening if given other unnatural or unauthorized verbal commands (i.e. door will react for “Open” but not for “Turn On”).

The PDF provides you with 5 example Shortcuts listed in color for you to try out and modify to your specific needs.
